What Private Photo Vault gets right
It is worth saying plainly: this is one of the better-built apps in the category. It has a decoy password, a break-in report that photographs whoever failed an unlock, pattern and PIN entry, and encrypted cloud backup. Most vault apps have none of that.
So the honest comparison is not "they hide, we encrypt". It is about how far the protection reaches and who else holds a copy.
Where the files live
Private Photo Vault's cloud backup goes to its own cloud vault, which means a copy of your files exists on its infrastructure. That is convenient, and it is a company you have to trust.
Vaultine encrypts every file on the device with AES-256-GCM before storing it, and splits and randomises the stored data so nothing on disk resembles the original. Backup is optional and goes to a Dropbox account you connect yourself, encrypted before it leaves the device — so Dropbox stores something it cannot read, and neither can we. That is what zero-knowledge means here: a statement about who can decrypt your files, and the answer is nobody but you.
Diverting versus destroying
A decoy password diverts. Someone forcing you to unlock sees a different set of files and goes away satisfied, and your real files are untouched. Vaultine's Decoy Vault does the same thing, and you choose in advance what it contains.
The Duress Vault is the other half, and it is a different tool. A third code opens an empty vault and wipes your real vaults as it does. That is for the situation where the files must not survive the next few minutes, not merely stay hidden. Both are Pro features, and both are deliberate: you configure them and you know exactly what they reveal.
One vault, four platforms
Private Photo Vault is a phone app. Vaultine runs on Windows, macOS, iOS and Android, which matters if the documents you actually want protected are the ones on your laptop. Nearly every app in this category is mobile-only, so this is less a feature difference than a difference in what the product is for.
