Open your camera roll and it's a mess of contexts. A passport scan you photographed on your phone. Tax documents you scanned at a desktop. A contract you signed on a tablet in a coffee shop. Your sensitive files don't respect device boundaries, but most of the apps built to protect them do.

Search "secure folder" or "photo vault" on any app store and almost everything you find is scoped to one operating system. That's the gap a genuinely cross-platform encrypted vault is built to close.

The One-Device Trap

Plenty of vault features are excellent and still only exist on one platform.

Samsung's Secure Folder is real, Knox-backed encryption, but it's a Samsung Galaxy feature. Move to an iPhone or a different Android brand and there's no export path; the files stay behind on the old phone. Apple's Hidden Album hides photos from casual scrolling on an iPhone, but it isn't encryption, and it doesn't exist on Windows or Android at all. Most "photo vault" apps on either app store are a single-platform PIN screen bolted onto a hidden folder, useless the moment you switch devices.

None of these are bad ideas. They're just incomplete ones, because they were built for a phone, not for the files.

Why Files Actually Move Across Devices

Think about where a sensitive file actually travels in a normal week:

  • Captured on the phone. A photo of a document, an ID, a whiteboard full of notes you don't want public.
  • Edited or filed on the laptop. Cropped, renamed, dropped into a folder alongside similar files, maybe attached to an email.
  • Backed up somewhere else entirely. A second computer, a work machine, a tablet you read on.

A vault that only runs on the device where the file was captured protects exactly one link in that chain. The other two are wherever the file happens to sit, unprotected, because the vault app never followed it there.

Being available on four app stores isn't the same as being cross-platform in the way that matters. The bar is higher than "the app also runs on Windows":

  • No server holding the key or the plaintext. The moment a central server is the thing that reconciles your vault across devices, that server becomes the single point that can be breached, subpoenaed, or simply go down.

A vault that gets all three right can move with your files. One that gets any of them wrong is a single-platform vault with a cross-platform marketing page.
