Yes, Secure Folder really does encrypt
This is not one of those comparisons where the other product turns out to be hiding files behind a PIN. Secure Folder is built on Samsung Knox and keeps your selected apps and files in a separate, hardware-backed encrypted container. It is the real thing, and it is well made.
So the honest question is not whether it encrypts. It is what the encryption is tied to.
Three places it is tied down
It only exists on Samsung Galaxy devices. Not Android generally — Samsung specifically. An iPhone, a Pixel, a Windows laptop: none of them have it.
Setup requires a Samsung account, and backup runs through Samsung's cloud. That is a company holding a copy and an identity attached to the fact that you use it.
The encrypted container cannot come with you. Switching to a non-Samsung phone means taking files out of the container first, which is precisely the moment the protection is off. There is no export that stays encrypted end to end.
What Vaultine trades, and what it gains
Vaultine does not have a Knox hardware container. It encrypts each file with AES-256-GCM in software, on the device, with a key derived from your 5x5 pattern or six-digit PIN that is never stored.
What that buys is portability and independence: the same vault on Windows, macOS, iOS and Android, no account, no company cloud, and no migration problem when you change phones. Backup, if you want it, goes to a Dropbox account you own, encrypted before it leaves the device.
It also adds two things Secure Folder does not have. The Decoy Vault opens on a second code and shows harmless files you chose in advance. The Duress Vault opens on a third code, shows an empty vault, and wipes your real vaults as it does.
When Secure Folder is enough
If you are on a Galaxy, you expect to stay on Galaxy, and you are comfortable with a Samsung account and Samsung's cloud, Secure Folder is a strong answer and it is already on your phone.
If any part of that is not true — an iPhone in the house, a Windows laptop with the documents that actually matter, a phone upgrade that might not be a Samsung, or a preference for no account at all — then the container's boundaries are the problem, not its cryptography.
